Really looking forward to chillin with Jamie Strong and Aloe Blacc at the Do-Over in LA this July. The party has been going for years and they have just started up a label. Debut 10″ featuring Flying Lotus and House Shoes has already sold out but fear not because a new one is on the way (details very soon and rest assured, it’s a totally unexpected pair of artists). In the meantime, co-founder, Stones Throw recording artist and all-round nice guy Aloe Blacc breaks it down for us.

Jose James’ new album ‘Blackmagic’ on Brownswood is incredible. Lifted from the album is the beautiful cover of Benga’s ‘Emotions’ as ‘Warrior’ with remixes from Sbtrkt, Jus Wan and Rockwell. He also has a voice and piano album of classics and standards with Jef Neve called ‘For All We Know’ on Verve due mid May.
Anyway, this is an artist I really respect and admire and as such could not cut my radio interview down enough to do it justice, so I aired part one on ‘Soul Glow’ but part two is an internet exclusive. Enjoy.

So, about 11 years ago I got started in the music industry and ‘Keep It Unreal’ by Mr Scruff was one of the first albums I ever got to work on. I also met Mr Scruff on his first Aussie tour with DJ Vadim and Strictly Kev of DJ Food and have since been lucky enough to meet up with him on subsequent tours and keep in touch with him.
Fast forward to 2010 and I’m finding my DJing chops are at a level where I’m comfortable rocking most forms of Soul music but my heart remains embedded in Hip-Hop. I have always been influenced by DJs who are physical with the decks, who get busy, who create layers and really push the boundaries as to what can work on the floor: DJs like Mr Scruff, for instance.
One thing I’ve always found that if you’re playing an instrumental and an acappella is that unless you’re rocking a 4 channel mixer with a CD cued up or are doing the three deck thing, you’re either short a channel or you need another hand…
hence Spare Hands.
Welcome to the first in a series of edits I’ve made to help DJs along by putting acappellas that sit really nicely over instro beats for you, so you have a spare set of hands to cue up your next track.
This first one marries the Jurassic 5 ‘Quality Control’ vocal over Mr. Scruff’s monstrous ‘Jus Jus’ beat that was given a booster in the 10th anniversary edition of the unreal ‘Keep It Unreal’ album. Many thanks to Mr Scruff for his help with the Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud sample which does not appear on the 12″ acappella.
Many hands make light work.
